What Is A Steel Mill?

Steel Mill

A steel mill is an industrial facility where raw materials like iron ore, limestone, and coal are transformed into steel. Steel mills are critical to the economy, providing the foundation for numerous steel mill products and infrastructure projects. There are generally two types of steel mills in use today: integrated mills and mini mills.

Integrated mills handle the entire process from smelting to finishing before sending them off to customers or additional processors. Mini mills focus on recycling scrap metal to make steel rather than using a combination of scrap metal, iron ore or direct reduced iron (DRI). Key components of these facilities include blast furnaces for smelting and electric arc furnaces for melting scrap steel. Processes like casting, rolling, and finishing shape steel into steel mill products.
